He and Laura Bush wanted to pay their respects, says the White House press secretary

President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush attended a wake for late political journalist Tim Russert on Tuesday.

The two were driven in a short, unmarked motorcade to St. Albans School in Northwest Washington, where the wake was held, the Associated Press reports.

White House press secretary Dana Perino told the AP that President Bush wanted to pay his respects.

After Russert, 58, died Friday of an apparent heart attack, President Bush — who frequently appeared on Meet the Press — praised the journalist for being "a tough and hard-working newsman.

"He was gregarious off the set as he was prepared on," he said in a statement. "Most important, Tim was a proud son and father."

A funeral is slated for tomorrow.

The Dixie Chick tells Us the singer should respond to the president's joke about the "Jessica Jinx"

After President Bush joked that he wanted to send the "Jessica jinx" to this summer's Democratic National Convention in Denver, there was no response from Jessica Simpson or her Dallas Cowboys quarterback beau Tony Romo (who played the worst game of his career as the singer cheered him on).

But Dixie Chicks singer Natalie Maines – whose infamous comments about the president are documented in the film Shut Up and Sing – shared her advice for Simpson with Usmagazine.com:

"Pick back!" she told Us at the Alexander McQueen Boutique Opening in West Hollywood Tuesday.

The president alludes to the "Jessica jinx"

President Bush wants to send the "Jessica jinx" to this summer's Democratic National Convention in Denver.

"We're going to send Jessica Simpson to the Democrat National Convention," he joked in front of members of the Super Bowl-winning New York Giants who were visiting the White House Wednesday.

Simpson was widely blamed for beau Tony Romo's worst performance of his career as a Dallas Cowboys quarterback in December.

"Right now, Jessica Simpson is not a fan favorite – in this locker room or in Texas Stadium," wide receiver Terrell Owens joked after the game.

In its latest issue, on newsstands now, Us Weekly confirms that Romo went ring-shopping at the Galleria in Dallas and the singer refers to him as "my future husband."

It isn't every night that celebs like Ashlee Simpson, Lauren Conrad, Heidi Montag, Spencer Pratt, Pam Anderson and the Jonas Brothers descend on Washington, D.C.

The stars – along with Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Rob Lowe, Marcia Cross and Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick – were guests of various news organizations for the White House Correspondents' Association dinner Saturday night.

Simpson's baby bump was barely visible in her black dress. The 23-year-old attended the event with fiance Pete Wentz.

The celebs were a welcome diversion from the otherwise tepid annual event, in which President Bush and Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson poked fun at themselves and the presidential candidates in front of an audience of the Washington press corps.

"Pamela Anderson and Mitt Romney in the same room?" Bush said. "Isn't that one of the signs of the apocalypse?"

Bush also joked about his daughter Jenna's May 10 wedding to fiancé Henry Hager.

"Senator [John] McCain's not here," the president told the audience. "He probably wanted to distance himself from me a little bit. You know, he's not alone. Jenna's moving out too."

He added, "[Hillary] Clinton couldn't get in because of sniper fire and Sen. [Barack] Obama's at church."

During Ferguson's speech, he joked to the president, "By the way, you were fantastic on Deal or No Deal."

President Bush Mocks Own Unpopularity on Deal or No Deal

President Bush made a rare appearance, via satellite, on NBC's Deal or No Deal Monday to wish good luck to a contestant on the show who served in Iraq.

Bush thanked the contestant, Army Captain Joseph Kobes, for his "courageous service in Iraq" (watch above).

The president made light of his unpopularity, noting, "I'm thrilled to be anywhere with high ratings these days."

He also joked that host Howie Mandel could help with the federal budget.

"Howie, I don't know if you're free to come to Washington anytime soon but I have to reach an agreement with Congress on the federal budget," Bush said. "How'd you like to host a $3 trillion dollar Deal or No Deal?"

Kobes won $26,000 during the program.

President Bush Admires Matt Lauer’s Medicine Ball Efforts

The women of America aren’t the only ones who appreciate Matt Lauer’s rigorous core work, according to Page Six. President Bush admired 48-year-old Lauer’s rock hard abs during an interview on the Today show. In the segment, which was taped Friday, Bush, 60, enters the Oval Office wielding a photo of a bare-chested Lauer in swim trunks on the beach.

"Oh, do not start with this,” replies Lauer. “That's just not nice [pointing to the picture]. The amazing thing is they put my head on your body."

Bush quips, "I don't spend that much time at the gym."

Talk to Us: Was it inappropriate for Bush to make jokes during a 9/11 broadcast or did you appreciate the comic relief?

Update: Apparently, that part of the segment never ran, so maybe the brass at NBC decided it was in bad form?

To kick off her first world tour in four years, Madonna put on a crown of thorns, hung herself from a cross, and compared President Bush to Osama bin Laden.

The Material Girl sang her ballad "Live to Tell" while suspended from an enormous mirrored cross as, behind her, video screens showed images of Third World poverty and grim stats like the 12 million children orphaned by AIDS in Africa. Later, during new song "I Love New York," she deviated from the script to make a crude reference to Bush and oral sex. Weâ€™ll see how Bush responds in his next State of the Union...

Us reported yesterday that Jessica Simpson -- who spent today lobbying Congress on behalf of the Operation Smile charity -- backed out of tonightâ€™s gala for The Republican National Committee (â€œUh, sorry, Jessica canâ€™t make it tonight. Sheâ€™s washing her hair extensions.â€) Today the wires are abuzz with the news that Jessica â€œsnubbed President Bush.â€ Au contraire mon frere. Actually, it was the Republicans that she was ditching.

"It just feels wrong," one Simpson insider told Reuters on Wednesday, adding that the actress keeps her political views private. "She would love to meet the president and talk about Operation Smile ... but she can't do it at a fund-raiser for the Republican Party."

To recap, Jessica Simpson will wear hot pants for Pizza Hut, but wonâ€™t have dinner with Republicans. Pizza Hut has more street cred than the GOP. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
