The story ends where it began, with a troubled teen getting a break from a guy who knows how life-altering a helping hand can be. But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
The OC ended tonight, after a four-year run that saw the hit series go from being the most talked-about program on the air to being one of the least-watched. It had its peaks (Sandy Cohen's dalliance) and it's valleys (one word: Oliver), but tonight's episode tied it all together with the kind of expensive, festive, anxiety-ridden bow we'd come to love unwrapping every week.
We won't spoil it for you TiVo junkies out there, but basically life seems to go happily ever after for the Cohens, et al. There are new babies, new college graduates, and new/old homes. And architect Ryan even finds a wayward youth to take home like a stray dog.
In honor of the of The OC's last dance, here is Usmgazine.com's look at the best of times and the worst of times in Newport Beach:
Good Times:
Caleb Nichol's illegitimate daughter: This was a plot point that threw everyone into an in-bred frenzy. Was Ryan schtupping his kinda-sorta sister? Could Kirsten forgive Caleb? Could Julie Cooper?
Marissa's Death: Finally Ryan and the rest of the crew could move on with their held-captive-by-the-self-destructive-succubus lives.
The Birth of Chrismukkah: A cute and funny cultural juggernaut, Chrismukkah spawned a whole new way of looking at the mixed-marriage kookiness of the holiday season.
Bad Times:
Caleb Nichol's death: He was a prick, to be sure, but Caleb was one of the best TV villain dads we've ever known. Watching his cold, heartless emotional absence gave us a little pang of childhood nostalgia.
Marissa's death: Sure she had it coming. But she is. Plus, we thought The OC had learned its lesson about tossing off principles after shipping Luke to Oregon.
The continuation of Chrismukkah: Sometimes a joke is only funny the first time you hear it. After that... well, after that it's four years later and you're marrying Summer and your mom's giving birth in someone's kitchen and the only prayer you have left is that you and your Death Cab-loving posse will end up on Nick at Nite.
