Mischa Barton learned the hard way last weekend that booze and pills don’t mix.
Attending a barbecue at her friend Masha Gordon’s L.A. home May 27, Mischa Barton suddenly fell ill after mixing antibiotics and a “s—tload” of alcohol, says a source close to the star.
Blogger Perez Hilton reported that recreational drugs may have been involved (the actress was photographed smoking what appeared to be a marijuana cigarette on May 20 in Cannes, France), but the source insists there was nothing “truly toxic” in her system.
But a party guest tells Us that Barton’s sickness was no less dramatic.
“Her face turned completely white, and she spent over 30 minutes in the bathroom,” says a party guest. “It was really scary.”
Things got so bad that the former O.C. star, 21, was rushed by ambulance to Sherman Oaks Hospital, where her family – including younger sister Hania, 19 – was waiting.

I just want to know why all of these celebs that are under age first of all (with the exception of Mischa who is now 21 but did her share of partying prior to turning this age) get away with underage drinking? These clubs in LA and NYC are all to blame for letting them in just to get their $$$!! If it was any of us caught drinking under age we would be in the slammer. All of you better get your act together because let me tell you, you are all pretty crappy role models for our kids growing up!

Antibiotics have been one of the greatest success stories of modern medicine - up there with the discovery of vaccination, and the discovery that you shouldn't mix your drinking water and your toilet water. Like all drugs, antibiotics can have their bad side effects, but their benefits are enormous. Even so, some people wrongly believe the opposite. And in fact, lots of people also wrongly believe that you should not drink any alcohol while taking any of the antibiotics.
The VD Clinics of the 1950s and 1960s gave the somber and serious advice that alcohol should absolutely not be used while taking penicillin. But there were no significant chemical interactions between penicillin and alcohol. The real reason that this advice was given was for moral reasons, not pharmacological reasons. The medicos of the day were worried that alcohol would reduce the inhibitions of the sufferers, and that, while under the influence, they might get a little "frisky" and pass on their infection to another person, before the penicillin had a chance to cure the sexually transmitted diseases.
That's how the mythconception that alcohol should never be taken with antibiotics arose.
Mind you, alcohol can put an extra load on your liver and immune system, can impair your judgment, liberate aggressive tendencies, reduce your energy state - and can be associated with staying up late, behaving recklessly, and not getting all the rest that your body needs to heal itself. So half a glass of an alcoholic beverage of our choice would be fine with most antibiotics.

However, alcohol can lower your general energy and delay your recovery so it is best to minimize drinking until you've finished the prescribed course of antibiotic treatment. ($$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
i've always thought alchohol mixed with an antiboitic lessened the effects of the drug like this statement says.... but says it delays your recovery

I have to agree with everyone on here...I have no sympathy for this loser. Everyone knows not to drink when you're on antibiotics..regardless of what they are..most people know NOT to mix them. She's an idiot. And not a very good actress. 5 years from now she'll be gone and no one will remember who she was.

Looks like another train wreck is joining the Paris/Lindsay/Nicole/Britney team. I'm sure it was a lot more than antibiotics and some drinking. Not to mention that these girls hardly eat anything to soak up the booze and pills. I'm surprised they didn't say she was hospitalized for "exhaustion". What is she doing smoking anything if she has "bronchitis"?

I have one word for e1 to google metronidazole... it is a high powered antibitoic used for numerous bacterial infections including respiratory infections. It has a bunch of generic names but the base is the same and it will make u sick if u take it and drink... but in my one time experience it took more than just a wine cooler.

mixing pills and alcohol is a big deal. Once I had JUST ONE margarita with an antibiotic that had a warning "avoid alcohol" and I got VERY sick. I felt like I had 10 margaritas insted of one. I can't imagine what I would have felt like if I had more than one.

antibiotics and alcohol are not that big a deal, the only thing that really happens is that the antibiotics don't work..... and that my friend i got from my doctor,,,, bot to say that someone cannot have an adverse affect to an antibiotic alone and perhaps the alcohol made it worse,,, yes, perhaps we do not know the whole story, but i hate the way Us tries to manipulate their readers,,, i see it over and over how they screw the story,,,,

Yes the pills were anibiotics, but I think she'd know better than to mix it with a “s—tload” of alcohol. I do think recreational drugs were invovled too. There should've NEVER been a "combo" of anything unless her doc said it was ok.

I too have fallen victim to the cross-buzz. Mixing Mary Jane and Alcohol can definitely have that effect, especially when you're on antibiotics. C'mon Mischa, I thought you were a seasoned partier, you should know that. Haven't you learned anything from your time spent with Paris and Nicole?
Luckily for me, I went through my crazy days in college and there were no cameras following me around to document my self-destructive behavior. Also, I was on a normal college kid's budget, so I couldn't afford to get into that much trouble if I wanted to. These girls just have too much, too fast! They think they're entitled to do whatever they want and never seem to learn from their mistakes, because there are no consequences. You would think that the embarrassment of having your business aired on TV and all the magazines would shame them into behaving, but instead, they seem to feed on the negative publicity. Wh0re$!!
