First we saw stars dousing themselves in freezing cold water and urging others to do the same in support of the ALS ice bucket challenge, and then they started choking down hot peppers to raise awareness. But the latest cause to take social media by storm has celebs like Riverdale stars Madelaine Petsch and Vanessa Morgan and gymnast Jordyn Wieber sporting purple hair in honor of the Sambazon #PurpleForThePlanet initiative. The acai-based biz is trying to save 30 endangered species in 30 days, one purple head at a time.

The campaign, which started on Earth Day and runs through May 22, asks fans to post a picture of themselves on social media with purple locks and the #PurpleForThePlanet tag. Sambazon has partnered with the Rainforest Trust’s “Save-An-Acre Program” to donate 5 acres of rainforest for every purple mane selfie posted.

The gold medal-winning Wieber got in on the action, showing off a lavender-tinged ponytail that looks oh-so-cool, while Morgan added some ultra-violet streaks to her tresses. She captioned her Insta “new purple hair who dis” and encouraged her followers to consider spicing up their ‘dos as well.

New purple hair who dis💁🏽‍♀️. Went #PurpleForThePlanet with @sambazon to help save 30 species in 30 days. I dare you to join me by dying, chalking or filtering your hair purple + post a selfie tagging @sambazon and #PurpleForThePlanet and they’ll protect 5 acres of the rainforest on your behalf!! You’ll also be entered for a chance to win acai bowls for a year. Link in bio for more! 💜

Petsch, meanwhile, opted to “digitally” alter her strands to plum shade in support of the cause and completed the look with furry eggplant-colored coat, crop top and sunglasses. For those who may be afraid to take the purple plunge but want to get involved, the Riverdale actress suggested using hair chalk or a temporary color spray for less of a commitment.

In addition to helping re-pollinate deforested land, the acres donated by Sambazon will also save the lives of endangered species (hence the 30 species in 30 days initiative). It is believed that for every 584 acres of rainforest that is cut down, one species is lost to extinction, so protecting that land will, in turn, save at-risk animal populations. Oh, and your purple hair pic also enters you for a chance to win a year supply of Sambazon acai bowls — a pretty delicious bonus!
