As one of the lucky few who snagged an invitation not just to the royal wedding at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor on the Saturday, May 19, but to the evening reception at Frogmore House as well, Victoria Beckham had a front row seat for the newly minted Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s nuptials, and she liked what she saw. In an interview with the Evening Standard, the former Spice Girl shared what she really though of Meghan Markle’s Givenchy gown and why she opted to once again wear navy for the royal occasion.
“I thought she looked absolutely beautiful,” Beckham said of the Clare Waight Keller-designed dress. “It really suited her.”
While Posh’s name was rumored to be in the running to design one of Meghan’s two dresses for the wedding, those honors ultimately went to Waight Keller at Givenchy and Stella McCartney, yet another Brit who created the slinky white halter dress for the epic evening fete. But the designer didn’t seem to mind. She said the now iconic six-seam, bateau-neckline dress and 16-foot veil (which took some 500 man-hours to produce) was “perfect” for the bride.
When it came to selecting what she would wear for the big day, Victoria took a hand out of her own playbook and once again rocked a navy frock. You may recall Posh sported a dress in the same shade to watch Prince William and Kate Middleton tie the knot in April 2011. She was expecting her daughter Harper at the time and said she was pleased to not be seven months pregnant for this one.
“Quite honestly, it was such a relief not to be hugely pregnant at this royal wedding that it was a joy to be able to choose anything I wanted to wear,” she joked, adding that she chose to wear the same color because she “loves a bit of navy.”
Attending with husband David, who was dapper in a morning suit, Victoria’s navy midi sheath dress was of her own design. She paired the chic cape-like frock with a matching netted hat and bright red-orange pumps. She told the Evening Standard that the there have been so many inquiries about the number (which was initially slated to hit stores in November as part of her pre-spring/summer 2019 collection), she’s moved up the release date to July.
So while we all didn’t enjoy quite the same level of access to the royal wedding as Posh, at least we will soon be able to dress like we did!
