About

Costner became enthralled with film when seeing How the West Was Won at a birthday party when he was 7 years old. “The music was playing before the curtain opened, and when it did, it was like God spoke to me and the scales came off my eyes,” he later recalled at the 2019 Western Heritage Awards.

The Yellowstone star began his own foray into movies in the early ’80s, starring in films like The Big Chill and Fandango. Costner quickly rose in the ranks to become a leading man in the 1989 blockbuster Field of Dreams. The beloved sports film not only captured the hearts of audiences and critics alike, it catapulted Costner into superstardom.

One year later, the Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves star directed and starred in Dances With Wolves. The critically acclaimed movie earned Costner an Academy Award for Best Director, his first Golden Globe and more. The movie also won the top prize: Best Picture. Two years after its 1990 release, Costner went on to star in another one of the most prolific films of his career: The Bodyguard, in which he starred opposite Whitney Houston.

Costner’s career only continued to pick up steam throughout the ’90s and 2000s, thanks to roles in JFK, Tin Cup, Message in a Bottle, Mr. Brooks and more. He went on to scoop up a SAG Award, an Emmy, and a second Golden Globe for the TV miniseries Hatfields & The McCoys in 2013.

As the Postman actor’s career continued to skyrocket — winning another SAG Awards in 2017 for Hidden Figures — it was landing the part of John Dutton on Yellowstone in 2018 that brought him back to his love of the Western genre and earned him praise from a new generation of fans. In 2023, Costner was honored with another Golden Globe win.

As eventful as Costner’s onscreen career has been over the decades, so has his family life. The California native wed his first wife, Cindy Silva, in 1978. The couple welcomed daughters Annie and Lily in 1984 and 1986, respectively, followed by son Joe in 1988.

After the pair divorced in 1994, Costner began dating Bridget Rooney, with whom he welcomed son Liam in 1996. The duo split two years later.

Costner got married for the second time in 2004, tying the knot with handbag designer Christine Baumgartner. The couple welcomed three children: sons Cayden and Hayes — in 2007 and 2009, respectively — and daughter Grace, born in 2010. In May 2023, Baumgartner filed for divorce from the actor after nearly 19 years of marriage.
