Celebrity Hairstylist Marc Mena Shares His Tips on How to Maintain Star-Worthy Extensions

Hello, long, luscious locks! Extensions give your hair both volume and extra length, but it can be easy for faux locks to start looking, well, fake. Watch today’s Red Carpet Daily, presented by AT&T, to see celebrity hairstylist Marc Mena show Us Weekly how to get an A-list-worthy, full-extensions look and give tips on maintaining it for lasting results!

There are a lot of ways to add fake hair — you can sew it, clip it or braid it. But Mena, who works at NYC-based Warren Tricomi salon, fuses his strands with glue in centimeter-wide sections (his in-salon session can cost up to $4,000). This way, he tells Us Weekly video correspondent Christina Garibaldi, he can add dimension with different colors of hair for a soft, highlighted look.

Once you have natural-looking extensions, you’ll want to take just as good care — or even better care — of your fake strands as your real hair. This means sleeping with your tresses in a loose, high ponytail or low braid and drying them post-shower with a T-shirt — not a towel.

“Imagine rubbing a towel on your skin — you start to burn after a while,” Mena, who also styles Mindy Kaling and Neve Campbell, tells Us. “You do that with a T-shirt and nothing happens. … It’s much better for your hair!”
