Watch Celebrity Hairstylist Matt Fugate Give Us a Red Carpet–Worthy Braided Updo

If the idea of creating an intricate braided updo makes you break out in hives, celebrity hairstylist Matt Fugate is here to show you how easy it actually can be. Fugate, who has worked with celebs including Karlie Kloss, Jaimie Alexander and more, stopped by Us Weeklys style department to show video correspondent Jackie Miranne (and all of our Facebook followers) that plaits look more complicated than they truly are. “It’s not something you should be fearful of,” he tells Us. “[All] you’ll need [is] a couple hairpins [for] rogue hairs and elastics for binding.”

The NYC-based Serge Normant stylist broke down a wraparound waterfall braid for Us, step by step. “If you’re going to do anything that [coils] around the head, I recommend a side part,” he begins. Then, he stresses, “it’s all about repetition.”

Fugate suggests starting with a section of hair (parted in three) at the crown of your head. Take the two outside pieces and weave them beneath the middle strands, Dutch style. Fugate adds that you shouldn’t worry if your braid looks messy or isn’t tight. “Unkept braids are more flattering. [This one] is pretty loose off the head,” he explains.

To see how he created the rest of the ‘do, including the waterfall — which is simpler than it seems — watch the rest of our special “Braids for Days” Red Carpet Daily Facebook Live Extra, above!
