She put a ribbon on it!

“The inspiration behind the look was the dress,” celeb hairstylist Vernon Francois, who created the look, tells Us Weekly. “I wanted [her hair] to look like a vase, like a pitcher — so you would literally take the hair, put it on a table, and it’d look stunning.”

Francois began by blowing Nyong’o’s hair out with some heat and moisturizing lotion, and formed soft curls by twisting her hair around a tail comb. He then proceeded to mold her hair for different texture.

For the adornments, Francois, who also works with Eve, found the silk fabric from New York City’s Fashion District — though the idea had European influence.

“I did the [bows] for Margiela in Paris. The ribbon was pulled off a bag handle!” he reveals.

He began by tying the material in bows and gluing them together. Then Francois secured them with bobby pins. For a finishing touch, he put hairspray on some of the adornments for a little bit of extra shine — though Nyong’o’s review was already glowing.

“She laughed when she saw herself in the mirror, and went ‘Vernon…Vernon!” he says.
