“We were very reserved at the beginning, and when we first found out, we were weary of getting our hopes up, because we didn’t want a repeat to happen,” Russ tells Us Weekly exclusively. The couple previously revealed during season 3 of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? that they had suffered a miscarriage.

Paola, who exclusively shared her pregnancy news with Us on Wednesday, July 25, is still remaining cautious. “[We’re] just trying to protect ourselves. Like, you don’t want to get your hopes up because anything could happen, but it’s like, it’s hard not to feel excited. But every morning I try to just check on the baby’s heart rate and I try to find it, and I’m like, ‘OK, everything is fine,’” the reality star says. “You always feel like something can happen. Even if you don’t want to think about it, but it’s like, you’re more concerned.”

The pair — they tied the knot in October 2013 — had taken a break from trying to conceive, so they could not believe they were expecting at first. “I was late … so I was going to a training for Zumba actually and I was like, ‘OK, I’m gonna do it.’ I don’t know. That was crazy to do it before I was leaving, and I just look at my husband and I’m like, ‘I’m pregnant,’” Paola recalls. “But in shock. I didn’t have any emotions. I was just like … shocked. And he looked at me like … ‘Uh … yeah.’ We both were really shocked.”

Now, Russ works to indulge his wife’s cravings — chocolate covered strawberries, citrus and salt are her must-haves — and exercise understanding. “It’s bringing more patience with me in our relationship,” he notes.

Paola elaborates: “There are days like, I feel like I’m angry for no reason and I get so sensitive that I get upset with him and I cry for no reason and then I start crying like, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.’ Like, I feel terrible and he’s like, ‘OK, I understand.’ He’s been so calm, and I’m so glad that I’m doing this with him, because I don’t know if anyone else would be able to handle me, but he’s been amazing with supporting me.”

Russ admits the duo’s arguments “tend to grow on camera,” but the fact that a little one is on the way means “we’re gonna focus on what’s important.” One thing they don’t agree on? The baby’s gender. She wants a girl while he would like a boy. They will find out who gets their way at an upcoming gender reveal party.

The TLC stars are glad they are finally able to share their bundle-to-be with the world. “I went to the Maxim party and I was … the dress I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” Paola tells Us. “I tried to walk, but it was like a teeny tiny belly and everybody was like, ‘Are you pregnant?’ And I was like, ‘No, that’s a burrito. I just ate a burrito.’ Yeah, but finally I feel great that I can actually like let my belly go and not feel like I’m sucking in.”

Russ adds: “We’ve been waiting to announce this for forever, or it seems like forever. It hasn’t been forever, but even those little small changes, it’s like … I’m like, ‘You can’t expose any of that. It’s a secret.’ So now she can finally be herself again.”
