Life as he knows it is about to change — but Josh Duhamel is more than okay with that. Just two days after he and wife Fergie announced that they’re expecting their first child together later this year, the Safe Haven star opened up about his feelings on first-time fatherhood.
“It’s very exciting,” the 40-year-old actor told omg! Yahoo on Wednesday, Feb. 20, in London, where he and the Black Eyed Peas singer were spotted taking in the sights and chowing down at a local pizza joint. Duhamel is in Great Britain to promote his new film with Julianne Hough; Fergie, 37, has no apparent sign of a baby bump just yet.
“Seeing that ultrasound is unlike anything you’ve ever seen,” the proud papa-to-be added. “Unless you’ve had one yourself. You’re like, ‘Wow, it’s mine.'”
Duhamel has some experience playing a dad onscreen, in Safe Haven and 2010’s Life as We Know It, but he says it’s his inner child that may prove most valuable. “I think that I’ve always had an affinity for kids,” he told omg!. “There’s something about me and kids that just click. I don’t know if it’s because I am a kid, but it does prepare you whenever you’re around them.”
That said, the actor realizes he still has a lot to learn. “All that stuff is a learning experience for when it actually happens, but I don’t think you’re ever truly prepared until it’s your own,” he admitted.
Fergie announced the couple’s happy news on Feb. 18 on Twitter. She and Duhamel have been married since January 2009.
