Katie Lowes is getting personal. The actress revealed on her podcast that she suffered a miscarriage before the birth of her son, Albee.
“I woke up and the baby was gone and for me — and I wasn’t in pain afterward — but the real pain was mental and it was sh—ty,” the 36-year-old Scandal actress said during an episode of Shondaland’s Katie’s Crib on Sunday, May 20. “I think the initial feeling when I found out there was no heartbeat from the doctor in a routine checkup was, like, ‘OK, let’s Olivia Pope the situation. Let’s fix it. Let’s make this schedule. Let’s get to the hospital. Let’s get the dilation and curettage. Let’s get that done. When can I start trying again?’”
“As soon as it set in that I’d had a miscarriage, what happens is you have a major hormonal drop-off,” Lowes continued. “And I think I was massively sad for about three months, and I was only pregnant for three months.” She also revealed that she went through a lot of therapy and that her body and emotions also took around three months to adjust after the loss.
“It is weird how women are f—king resilient as f—k, guys,” Lowes said. “It is crazy, like, the amazing women that we all know collectively, or may know individually, who have gone through lots of s—t and have come out on other side is just unbelievable to me.”
The actress promoted the episode on her Instagram on Monday, May 21, and thanked her guests. “So grateful to these two @thejackieseiden and @klem099 for coming on #KatiesCrib to talk about some things…we don’t talk about!” she captioned a photo of them together. “When it comes to miscarriages and the sadness and the loss: you are not alone. New episode drops today and I hope it can help heal… lots of love! #KatiesCrib @byshondaland.”
Lowes welcomed Albee — now 7 months — with husband Adam Shapiro in October 2017. She announced the news ahead of the hit ABC series’ final season premiere that month. “Baby’s first #Scandal Thursday!” she captioned an Instagram photo of her son’s feet. “@shappyshaps and I are thrilled to welcome Albee Shapiro to our family! We’re happy & healthy! #BabyGladiator.”
