Homeland's Morena Baccarin debuted her baby bump and talked about why costar Claire Danes' pregnancy last season was a "gift."

Morena Baccarin is boldly going where Claire Danes has gone before. The Homeland actress, 33, is currently navigating the tricky business of filming while pregnant with her first child — a task that’s made easier by the fact that costar Danes did it last season. Speaking about her experience at the Variety EMMY Studio “Race to Emmy Red Carpet” event at West Hollywood’s Palihouse Hotel on Thursday, May 30, Baccarin said she was grateful to be able to follow in Danes’ footsteps as a working mom-to-be.

“The way has been paved for me in a really great way,” she said, noting that the value isn’t just in what she learned but also in what the crew learned from Danes’ pregnancy. (The Golden Globe-winning star was pregnant with son Cyrus for much of the second season; she gave birth in December 2012.)

“I was a little freaked out about telling the show — just because, as a woman, [I had] a sense of responsibility to my job and I suddenly felt like, ‘Am I going to be disappointing everybody that I’m knocked up?’ But life goes on,” Baccarin continued. “Everybody was so kind to me. Claire’s laid down the groundwork, and they’re really good at hiding pregnancies now.”

The mom-to-be certainly wasn’t concerned about hiding her pregnancy on Thursday night. Debuting her baby bump for the first time since announcing in early May that she and husband Austin Chick are expecting, the Firefly alum showed off her new curves in a statement-making red frock with a peplum waist.

Being able to play up her pregnancy is something of a foreign concept for Baccarin, as she spends most of her time on set trying not to think about it. “It’s challenging, because I have to ignore the biggest thing that’s happening to me right now,” she said. “But it’s somewhat of a relief, too, because it’s obsessive, and I’ve got to a place now where you just think every second of the day, ‘What’s happening inside of me?'”

“Having Claire there is a gift,” she added. “She now has a beautiful little boy, and it’s the nicest thing to know I’m in that community.”

Her biggest concern, she quipped, is having to play such an unhappy character. (Baccarin stars on the Showtime series as Jessica Brody, the betrayed wife of retired Marine Nicholas Brody.)

“I was actually really concerned about the emotional life that I have to have on the show, and I was wondering if that would affect the baby. I’m just so unhappy on the show all the time!” she explained. “I asked my doctor, ‘I have to cry all the time. Is that a problem?’ And he said, ‘As long as you’re not crying for a reason, for yourself because you’re unhappy, it’s alright.'”
