Dad life! Ryan Reynolds hilariously stopped by Live! With Kelly and Michael and The Tonight Show on Monday, Sept. 21, where he updated the hosts about his baby daughter, James.
“She’s good,” Reynolds, 38, told Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan of his 9-month-old tot. “She didn’t sleep last night… first fever.” The crowd let out a sympathetic sigh, and Reynolds replied, “Awww, it’s normal! It’s fine.”
The Deadpool star then launched into a story about how he discovered that his daughter was sick. “I was told to check her temperature… through the rectum, which for me it was like… ‘Noooo, it can’t be. There’s a mouth! There’s an armpit. There’s gotta be something!'”
Reynolds said the doctor told him and his famous wife, Blake Lively, to team up and for one parent to distract James while the other checks her temperature. Ripa, who has three young kids of her own, then chimed in about the ordeal of checking up on her kids.
“No matter how many hand puppets you put up there, they’re always like, ‘What’s that?!'” she joked, while the audience roared in response.
“It was terrifying, though. It all went well, though,” he added, before launching into thoughts about walking his baby girl down the aisle in the future. “And she’ll go, ‘I know what you did.'”
Later, Reynolds dished more details about his little one to Jimmy Fallon, and the two bonded over their baby girls.
“She’s saying ‘mama,'” Reynolds said about James. “What my wife doesn’t realize is [the baby] calls me ‘Mama’ too. Seriously. I literally had to sit her down and tell her that penises don’t work that way. She understands… she gets it.”
While Reynolds’ interviews with Ripa and Strahan, as well as Fallon, were lighthearted and funny, the actor told a significantly darker tale about his little girl in his October 2015 cover story for GQ. The star revealed that he recently had to cut off one of his closest friends for attempting to sell photos of James, whose face has never-before-been-revealed by her A-list parents.
“A guy that I’d known for my whole life, one of my closest friends growing up, he had been shopping pictures of my baby around,” Reynolds shared. “Somebody I grew up with, yeah. Somebody I’ve known, who’s been one of my closest friends, for 25 years… It was like a death. It was like one of those devastating things to find out.”
