In memoriam. Chrissy Teigen has been transparent about her grieving process since suffering a pregnancy loss in September 2020. The Cravings author and her husband, John Legend, named their late son Jack, honoring his death the following month with an Instagram post. “We never decide on our babies’ names until the last possible moment after they’re born, just before we leave the hospital," the model captioned black-and-white hospital photos in October 2020. “But we, for some reason, had started to call this little guy in my belly Jack. So he will always be Jack to us. Jack worked so hard to be a part of our little family, and he will be, forever.” She concluded, "To our Jack — I’m so sorry that the first few moments of your life were met with so many complications, that we couldn’t give you the home you needed to survive. Later that same month, Teigen addressed criticism of her intimate, emotional photos, writing in a Medium essay that she couldn’t express “how little” she cared about other people’s negative opinions. “I lived it, I chose to do it, and more than anything, these photos aren’t for anyone but the people who have lived this or are curious enough to wonder what something like this is like," the Utah native, who is also the mother of daughter Luna and son Miles, explained. "I explained to a very hesitant John that I needed them, and that I did NOT want to have to ever ask. That he just had to do it,” Teigen wrote. "It didn’t make sense to him at the time. "We are shocked and in the kind of deep pain you only hear about, the kind of pain we’ve never felt before,” Teigen captioned her Instagram reveal. "We were never able to stop the bleeding and give our baby the fluids he needed, despite bags and bags of blood transfusions. It just wasn’t enough.”

She wrote in her Medium essay that her pregnancy loss was due to partial placenta abruption, writing, "We monitored it very closely, hoping for things to heal and stop. In bed, I bled and bled, lightly but all day, changing my own diapers every couple of hours when the blood got uncomfortable to lay in. I actually became an adult diaper expert for my own personal entertainment. [Jack] was barely able to float around. At some points, I swore it was so low I could lay on my back and feel his arms and legs from outside my belly.”

"And then we get to where we’re going, they’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh, he must be thirsty.’ This might sound crazy to people, but they’ll put a little glass of water next to his little box of ashes. And they really love being a part of it.”

During an interview with BBC Sounds' “Desert Island Disks,” the “All of Me" singer reflected on Teigen’s decision to be open about the experience. 

"That was difficult and I was hesitant to share it, but I think Chrissy was really right in encouraging us to share it," he said of his wife’s decision to document the grieving process via Instagram following their loss. “I think it really was powerful for a lot of people and way more people than anybody realizes go through this and I think they feel alone a lot of times." 

The EGOT winner added that it was “a really powerful, wise decision by Chrissy to share it because it helped a lot of people." 

Legend, for his part, healed through his creativity. "Some of the songs are about coping with loss, you know, and grief and when you feel broken," he said. "And those experiences I was able to channel into the music."
