Us Weekly confirmed on February 1, 2011, that Applegate and her then-fiancé had welcomed their first child. “Mother and daughter are doing great,” a rep for the actress told Us at the time.
Late that month, the Dead to Me star opened up about childbirth during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I didn’t like [the epidural],” she said. “I didn’t like the feeling of numbness. It was really creepy to me. It was too much, so we turned it off and we opted to go all the way … feeling it all. It was profound pain.”
She added at the time: “I dropped my gown, which I don’t do. This part of my body is very private to me. That’s a real private place. A place that I don’t have a good relationship with, let’s say. But at that moment of pulling [Sadie] out and I just tore that thing off. There’s a room full of people that I don’t know. Nurses and doctors. And she and I just laid there. It was the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”
“I have a small but mighty support system and Martyn has really been an incredible part of my life,” Applegate previously told Us in 2010. “Without him, I don’t know if I could’ve gone through any of it. He came around at a time when there was a lot of loss in my life on many levels, so he’s been a really incredible help.”
“Right now, I couldn’t imagine getting up at 5 a.m. and spending 12 to 14 hours on a set; I don’t have that in me at this moment,” Applegate said in a February 2023 interview with The Los Angeles Times, pondering the idea of retirement. “[I am considering] doing a s—t ton of voice-overs to make some cash to make sure that my daughter’s fed and we’re homed.”
“The most important person in this world is my daughter,” Applegate gushed in November 2022 as she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles. “You are so much more than even you know. You are so beautiful and kind and loving and smart and interesting.”
