The Royal Family: Get to Know the Next Generation

The British royal family just keeps growing — and with each new arrival, Queen Elizabeth II’s legacy continues. The late monarch welcomed eight grandchildren before her death at age 96 in September 2022. While many royal fans know that generation, which includes Prince William and Prince Harry, it’s the queen’s great-grandchildren that still have Us oohing and awing today. Elizabeth’s first great-grandchild, Savannah Anne Kathleen, was born in December 2010 to her daughter Anne, Princess Royal’s son, Peter Phillips, and his now-ex wife, Autumn. The eldest of the royal family’s youngest generation became a big sister in March 2012 when Isla Elizabeth joined the family. Then came Prince George in July 2013! The firstborn son of William and his wife, Princess Kate, had the entire world wrapped around his finger from the moment he arrived. At the time, the queen’s first great-grandson, George, became third in line for the throne. (He moved up to second in line when his grandfather King Charles III ascended the throne in fall 2022. George acted as one of four Pages of Honor at Charles’ coronation in May 2023). “May he be long-lived, happy, and glorious, and one day reign over us!” the royal crier shouted prior to George’s birth announcement placement outside of Buckingham Palace in July 2013. “God save the Queen!” As the years passed, many new cousins were added to the children’s roster of lifelong friends. Mia, the first child of Zara Tindall (née Phillips) and her husband, Mike Tindall, was born in January 2014. Next came George’s baby sister, Princess Charlotte, in May 2015. Their younger brother, Prince Louis, arrived three years later in April 2018. All three of William and Kate’s kids are in front of Harry when it comes to the monarchy’s royal line to the throne. One month after Louis’ birth, a source told Us Weekly exclusively that Charlotte had a “great bond” with her siblings. [jwplayer qvPgmdL5-zhNYySv2] “She is really enjoying having a younger brother to play with,” the insider said in May 2018. “She’s taking her big sister duties very seriously. She won’t leave baby Louis’ side.” While the three siblings’ close bond has continued to develop over the years, more relatives have arrived to add some excitement to playdates. Zara and Mike’s second daughter, Lena, was born two months after Louis in June 2018. William and Kate’s children got their very own first cousin when Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, welcomed their son, Archie, in May 2019. Three more babies were added to the family in quick succession in 2021. Princess Eugenie’s first child, son August, arrived in February 2021, followed by Zara and Mike’s son, Lucas, who made his debut that May. One month later, Harry and Meghan’s daughter, Lilbet "Lili" Diana, was born in June 2021. While her first name honors her great-grandmother Elizabeth, her middle name (like her cousin Charlotte Elizabeth Diana) is a tribute to Harry and William’s late mother, Princess Diana.

Prince Andrew and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson’s eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, joined the royal parents club in September 2021 with the birth of her first child, daughter Sienna.

Meet Savannah

Peter and then-wife Autumn welcomed their first child, daughter Savannah Anne Kathleen, in December 2010. The little girl, who weighed 8 pounds, 8 ounces, is Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest great-grandchild and Anne’s first grandchild.

Isla Joins the Family

Peter and Autumn’s second daughter, Isla Elizabeth, was born in March 2012 at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, the same place at which her sister arrived. (The former couple finalized their divorce in June 2021 after announcing their separation in February 2020.)

Hello There, George!

The Prince and Princess of Wales, who tied the knot in April 2011, welcomed their first child, Prince George Alexander Louis, in July 2013. The 8-pound, 6-ounce baby boy became the third in line to the throne upon his arrival. He is now second in line, behind his grandfather Charles and father William.

Oh My, Mia!

Zara gave birth to her first child with husband Mike in January 2014. Mia Grace, who is Anne's third grandchild, weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces.

Meet Little Miss Charlotte

William and Kate’s second child, Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, made her debut in May 2015. The little girl’s status as next in line to the throne after brother George was not overtaken by her younger sibling, Prince Louis, upon his birth because of a change to the Succession to the Crown Act of 2013.

Louis Joins the Crew

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge welcomed their third child, son Louis Arthur Charles, in the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital in London — where both his siblings were delivered — in April 2018. The prince made his debut on the same day as his birth, when his parents took him out onto the steps of the hospital. Prince William brought Prince George and Princess Charlotte to meet their brother, and the little guy was on his way home with his mother just seven hours after she delivered him.

Lena Makes Her Debut

Zara and Mike welcomed their second child, a daughter named Lena Elizabeth (in honor of Queen Elizabeth), in June 2018. Buckingham Palace revealed that the little girl weighed 9 pounds, 3 ounces, upon arrival. The queen’s granddaughter previously suffered a miscarriage in 2016.

Archie Arrives

Harry and Meghan welcomed their first child, a son named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, in May 2019. Two days after his birth, the couple stepped out with him for the first time at Windsor Castle. “I have the two best guys in the world, so I’m really happy,” the new mom gushed at the time.

Hello, August!

Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank became parents in February 2021 with the arrival of son August Philip Hawke. “Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well,” read Buckingham Palace’s statement at the time, noting that the queen, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson were all "delighted." August’s middle name is nod to the late Prince Philip, Eugenie’s grandfather and the late queen’s husband.

Lucas Makes an Entrance

Zara and Mike welcomed baby No. 3, Lucas Philip, on their bathroom floor in a “chaotic” March 2021 birth. Lucas joined sisters Mia and Lena and was given the moniker “Philip” to pay homage to the family’s late patriarch.

Baby Girl Lili Is Here

Meghan and Harry's second child, daughter Lilibet "Lili" Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, arrived in June 2021. Lili is named after Queen Elizabeth II, whose family nickname is Lilibet. Her middle name honors Harry's late mother, the former Princess of Wales.

Sweet Sienna Is Born

Beatrice gave birth to a baby girl, Sienna Elizabeth, in September 2021 with husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, who has a son, Christopher Woolf, from a previous relationship. One month later, Mozzi gave fans a glimpse at his daughter’s footprints via Instagram. "Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi. Our life together has just begun, and I can't wait to see all the amazing things that await us,” he captioned the snap.
