Sharna Burgess' Most Candid Postpartum Quotes and Photos After Welcoming Son Zane: 'I Am Utterly Unrecognizable'

The transition to motherhood. Sharna Burgess has spoken candidly about her changing body and postpartum recovery after welcoming son Zane with Brian Austin Green. The Dancing With the Stars pro took to social media to announce her baby boy's arrival in June 2022. “Zane Walker Green 06/28/2022 at 12:12pm My heart is now forever outside of my body. 🤍,” Burgess wrote via Instagram Story at the time. The dancer, who started dating Green in late 2020, went on to gush about her "overwhelming" love for her child. "I don't yet have words that can do this justice. I know I look at him and well up with tears at how cracked wide open my heart is and how deeply and unconditionally I love him," the Australia native captioned an Instagram post in July 2022. "I know I'll never be the same again, ever. I realize I never knew love of this kind or capacity existed and it's beautifully overwhelming to process." Burgess noted that her view of the world changed after giving birth, adding, "You know, that whole 'you'll understand when you have kids' thing parents say when they are fussing over you. I get it now. I will love him and worry about him until my last breath and beyond. Heaven is a place on Earth, and I found it." "I didn’t expect a C section," she wrote via Instagram that same month, sharing a selfie that showed her scar from the procedure. "I didn’t necessarily have a birth plan but even my relaxed go with the flow approach got tested when we were told this was the safest option. Our little Zane was trying so hard to get out but after 30+ hrs of labor and my water breaking TWICE, I just wasn’t dilating enough." For Burgess, the decision to deliver her baby through a C-section instead of vaginally was a shock. "In the moment it was scary, s–t even on the table it was scary," she revealed. "But Zane arrived healthy and happy and that was always the priority." The ballroom dancer explained that she was "afraid" to look at her body in the initial days after her son's arrival. "I looked and thought, 'wow, I am utterly unrecognizable and my body has been through some serious s--t,'" she concluded. "But of course it had… I grew a life inside me. Showing the Ups and Downs

"I was doing great with postpartum and I definitely couldn't say that I was struggling with postpartum depression," Burgess said on Good Morning America in December 2022. "But I certainly struggled with those intrusive mom thoughts."

The professional dancer recalled picturing the "worst-case scenario" when it came to her baby. "Walking downstairs — and not just a fall on your back, slide down the stairs, but a full on tumble — and me ending up on top of him," she explained. "I felt myself having this panic attack, which I've never had a panic attack before. I'm a new mom and, all of a sudden, I was in this full-blown panic attack."

The Reality of Being a Mother

In November 2022, Burgess took to social media to offer an update on life with her baby boy. 

"I genuinely live in sweats and no make up so a selfie was necessary the one day I managed to make a small effort 🤣," she captioned a lengthy Instagram post. "Mom life is busy and at the same time I go nowhere. Between pumping, feeding, playtime and everything in between there are no hours left in the day."

The DWTS pro added: "Tbh I realized at one point I hadn't showered in 2 days…. And im a 2 showers a day human!!! Finding time and balance is the new skill im trying to master. I wouldn't change a single thing though, im obsessed with life and everything in it. Balance will come, but what I won't get back is all these moments with my son while he lets me smother him with love and affection. Watching him grow and learn is beautiful and like all Moms… I could swear my baby is the smartest and the cutest in all the land."

Adjusting to Motherhood

"I spotted a kneecap!!! Not kidding...they have been MIA until now," the choreographer wrote via Instagram Story in July 2022 alongside a photo of herself holding Zane while wearing a robe over her postpartum underwear. "My body has been utterly unrecognizable after giving birth. Every ounce of water in my body has gone to my vagina and down lol." 

Burgess continued: "Postpartum is serious business guys. The body just has to work its way through it slowly. Ladies, our bodies are incredible. I'm in awe and wonder of what's happening, all while practicing a new level of patience with myself. And it's worth every single bit."

Not Rushing It

Her New Normal

In July 2022, the new mom noted that her postpartum recovery was "unlike anything else." 

"However you delivered your baby, C- Section or vaginally, postpartum recovery is no joke," she wrote via Instagram at the time. "Women, we are incredible, remember that when you’re crying peeing for the first time, or unable to physically get yourself out of bed. It’s painful and emotional but it’s beautiful and man… is it worth every single second."

Broadening Her Horizons

During an Instagram Q&A, the So You Think You Can Dance alum explained why she decided to eat her placenta after giving birth. “I highly recommend this,” she shared. “I had my placenta picked up by our baby nurse who is also a doula. She processed my placenta … and put it into capsules for me.”

Burgess, who took the pills twice a day, claimed that postpartum placenta ingestion helps "with hormone balancing, milk production, PPD prevention and all around recovery.”

She added: “My recovery has been amazing and my mood and milk the whole time have been positive.”

Her New Role

"This connection to him is unreal and unlike anything else I’ve experienced. When I’m away from him even my body (boobs 😂) aches to get back to him. This gift of watching and guiding him is everything I could have dreamed and more," Burgess gushed via Instagram in August 2022. "His face lights up when he sees me now and his tiny hands hold onto me when we snuggle. I could never ever get enough of him."

She added: "2 months of being a Mama and it’s by far the most bad ass and beautiful thing I’ve ever done."
