Shelley Malil, the Indian-born star who played Steve Carell's electronics store coworker in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, testified Monday that he doesn't remember stabbing his ex-girlfriend 20 times in 2008.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Malil, 45, told jurors in a Vista, Calif., courtroom that he went after Kendra Beebe with a knife because he was fighting back after being struck in the back of the head in her yard.
When a prosecutor showed Malil photos of Beebe's wounds, he replied: "I don't remember any specific act that I did that caused any specific injury to her body."
He also testified that he did not know the full extent of her injuries until months later, when he first saw the hospital photos, according to the report.
"It just didn't make sense," he said. "It didn't make sense that our little conflict that we endured caused that much injury."
Last week, the 38-year-old Beebe — who survived the attack — testified that Malil walked up to her at her San Diego, Calif., home and repeatedly spewed names at her before stabbing her three times. She said a visiting friend got the knife off Malil, but the actor then grabbed a butcher knife, chased her through the house and continued to stab her until she collapsed on the front porch and a neighbor intervened.
Malil — who has pleaded not guilty to charges of premeditated attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and residential burglary — faces 21 years to life in prison if convicted.
Testimony is expected to conclude Tuesday.
