Spoke too soon. Amber Heard’s legal team retracted the statement they released regarding the actress’ divorce settlement with estranged husband Johnny Depp.
Heard’s attorney, Samantha F. Spector, issued a retraction to ABC News on Tuesday, August 16, clearing up former comments made in a statement that was released shortly after the former couple reached a reported $7 million settlement. In Spector’s initial statement, she and fellow lawyer Joseph P. Koenig expressed that Heard, 30, had been “vindicated in the Public Court of Opinion.”
However, Spector insists that her statement was given “without the knowledge or approval” of her famous client.
“The statement is untrue and we retract it, without qualification. My assertion that Amber Heard has been vindicated in the court of public opinion is not true,” Spector told ABC on Tuesday. “We regret the error and apologize to Johnny Depp.”
As previously reported, Heard and Depp, 53, settled their divorce on Tuesday following months of allegations by the Magic Mike XXL actress against her estranged husband.
Though she accused Depp of physical and verbal abuse (claims his lawyer has repeatedly denied), she withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order on Tuesday, August 16, with prejudice, meaning she cannot refile the case.
“Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love,” the former couple — who wed in February 2015 after nearly three years of dating — said in a joint statement issued to Us Weekly about the settlement. “Neither party has made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent of physical or emotional harm. Amber wishes the best for Johnny in the future. Amber will be donating financial proceeds from the divorce to a charity. There will be no further public statements about this matter.”
Their settlement comes months after Heard filed for divorce from Depp in May. Prior to their split, the Alice Through the Looking Glass actor allegedly cut off his fingertip during a violent March 2015 fight in which he reportedly accused Heard of cheating on him with her London Fields costar Billy Bob Thornton.
According to TMZ, Depp used the blood from his injury to write “Easy Amber” and “Billy Bob” across their bathroom mirror. (Thornton, 61, denied the claims that he hooked up with Heard to TMZ.)
