Amy Schumer Breaks Down in Tears Over Body Image: “It’s Been a Struggle My Whole Life”

Amy Schumer doesn’t consider everything a joke. That’s why the 34-year-old comedienne is teaming up with Goodwill to inspire women to dress themselves with confidence. Her new project was inspired by her own insecurities related to being in the public eye.

“Some nights I just didn’t even want to go on stage because I couldn’t find an outfit I looked good in,” Schumer said at a Goodwill of California event, which aired on the Today show on Friday, Oct. 16.

In an accompanying interview with Maria Shriver on the Today show Schumer shared, “It’s been a struggle for me my whole life, especially just being in the entertainment industry, standing on a stage in front of people. I can’t perform my best or be confident if I’m not sure if I’m pulling at something. Sometimes I would just want to throw in the towel and say, ‘I’m not going to do stand-up tonight.’”

But the Inside Amy Schumer star found inspiration in stylist Leesa Evans, the woman behind her looks in the hit film Trainwreck

“Leesa had given me this gift of showing me how to dress and feel good,” Schumer explained, tearing up. “She didn’t have to do this, but she just did. She shopped for my sister also. And seeing my little sister [Kim Caramele] wearing a little blazer and a shirt and looking just like a strong, beautiful woman, I realized that holding myself back was also holding her back.”

It was an eye-opening moment for Schumer, who tearfully added, “And so to see the person I care the most about being given those tools was just really moving for me and I just wanted to give it to every woman.”

The actress, who recently hosted Saturday Night Live for the first time, is known for her self-deprecating comments during her stand-up routine. In her opening monologue for the Oct. 10 sketch comedy show, she joked, “I haven’t taken a naked picture of myself in a long time. Under this, you can’t tell, but it looks like a lava lamp. Things are moving around and not really finding a home.”
