Drink up, Anne! Anne Hathaway decided to just relax and have a good time during this year’s 86th Academy Awards. One year after winning Best Supporting Actress for Les Miserables — and lots of mockery and criticism — the star attended the biggest award show of the season with a flask in hand.
“I guess because I hosted one year — Block it out! I have — I’ve gone through it a couple of times, so this year, I decided to do something a little different,” the 31-year-old said during an appearance on Live! with Kelly & Michael on Wednesday, April 9. “I got a perfect purse-sized flask, which I put tequila in, and I had a great time! It was really nice, and it’s a great ice-breaker.”
“[I shared it]. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was sitting next to me,” she continued. “And Gabourey Sidibe, whom I never met before, but she’s so awesome.”
Of course, one can’t blame Hathaway for wanting a drink or two to get through the awards fest. The Dark Knight Rises actress told the Huffington Post back in January that she was fully aware “people needed a break” from her, prompting her to maintain a low profile during awards season. (Back in 2011, she got the worst reviews of her career after co-hosting the Oscars with James Franco. Last year, she was criticized for those eye-roll-inducing acceptance speeches and her dress drama with Amanda Seyfried.) Luckily, however, this year’s show went off without a hitch — unless you count almost stealing Penelope Cruz’s seat.
“I was led to my seat by my husband [Adam Shulman] and I stopped in the section that I thought I was sitting in, which was next to my friend Joseph Gordon-Levitt,” she told Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. “And they said, ‘Oh no, you are sitting in the center — something happened with Penelope Cruz and you’re going to sit in her seat.'”
“So I go trying to make my way into the center of the center of the center and there’s a beautiful woman wearing pink with her hair up, but she’s fully facing away from me and I’m like, ‘Shoot. I’m so sorry, I think you are in my seat,'” she added. “Penelope Cruz turns around.”
“We’re trapped,” she recalled about not having a seat. “And then we hear, ‘And we are back in 3..2.. and we see there’s one seat. And [Adam] goes, ‘What do we do?’ And I said, ‘Sit down.’ So I just sat in his lap.”
