Ben McKenzie Says He Didn’t Attend Adam Brody’s Wedding to Leighton Meester

Did they at least grab bagels the next morning? Ben McKenzie recently revealed that, sadly, he didn’t attend Adam Brody’s wedding to Leighton Meester back in February. Costarring together on the teen drama The O.C. from 2003 to 2007, McKenzie played rough-and-tumble kid Ryan Atwood opposite Brody’s geeky Seth Cohen.

“I did not go to his wedding. I think they wanted to kind of keep it super low-profile, so I did not take umbrage,” the Gotham star, 36, said during a HuffPost Live interview on Wednesday, Oct. 1. “His wife is awesome. Leighton’s great.”

Although he missed out on the vows (Us broke news at the time that the pair secretly wed), he and Brody, 34, have remained close since saying goodbye to the series created by Josh Schwartz (the man also behind Meester’s Gossip Girl).

“Adam and I stay in touch,” McKenzie explained. “We just saw each other in New York the last time he was here.”

The FOX series became a go-to for audiences every week, centering on McKenzie’s character moving from Chino to live with the wealthy Cohens of Orange County after his older brother Trey (Logan Marshall-Green) was sent to jail for auto theft. (Cue Imogen Heap’s “Hide & Seek” from season 2!) It also starred Rachel Bilson (Summer Roberts), Mischa Barton (Marissa Cooper), Chris Carmack (Luke Ward), Peter Gallagher (Sandy Cohen), Kelly Rowan (Kirsten Cohen), Tate Donovan (Jimmy Cooper), and Melinda Clarke (Julie Cooper).

“It was awesome. I landed that role by auditioning. I was a 23-year-old kid driving a $500 car and living on the floor of a friend’s apartment in the Valley,” McKenzie said of his tough beginnings in Hollywood.

“It was great to work with those guys. I mean we had an amazing cast and an amazing number of people who came through there,” he added. “It was fun.” Some other stars that made their way to the O.C. included Autumn Reeser, Samaire Armstrong, Olivia Wilde, Chris Pratt, and McKenzie’s real-life BFF, Paul Wesley.
