Major mea culpa. Vicki Gunvalson‘s ex-boyfriend Brooks Ayers has confessed to fabricating his cancer documents from City of Hope hospital, a day after a rep for the treatment center told Us Weekly that he was never a patient there.

“Words cannot express the deep regret that I have in fabricating documents to ‘prove’ to the world that I, in fact, have cancer,” Ayers told E! News on Wednesday, Nov. 11. “What I did was wrong and inexcusable. I acted alone, without Vicki’s knowledge, to produce documents for a reality TV show in hopes of putting doubts about my cancer to rest. I never intended to disclose my actual medical records or details about my private and personal medical history, thus the rationalization of presenting documents that weren’t true simply for a ‘storyline’ for the show.”

Ayers said this would be his final time addressing his cancer claims. “From this day forward, my own personal journey with this disease will remain private as I initially intended over a year ago,” he told the network on Wednesday. “My sincerest apologies to my family, friends, loved ones, and those who are battling this horrid disease for any additional pain and/or stress that I have caused. As [University of Louisville basketball coach] Rick Pitino once said, ‘Mistakes can be good. They are fertilizer. Everything I’ve learned about coaching [life], I’ve learned from making mistakes.’ I made a mistake yet I have learned a huge lesson as well.”

A rep for City of Hope hospital in Duarte, Calif., confirmed to Us Weekly on Tuesday, Nov. 10, that no one by the name of “David Brooks Ayers” had been treated at its cancer treatment center. The startling revelation came after an interview with E! News in which Ayers provided alleged documents that showed his supposed treatments for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Some of the alleged bills showed amounts exceeding $30,000 worth of treatments.

Meanwhile, his ex Gunvalson, 53, is beyond livid about Ayers’ lies. Throughout the last season, the veteran Orange County housewife defended her then-boyfriend, from whom she split this past August after a four-year relationship.

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, a fan asked Gunvalson about the status of her relationship with Ayers. “I don’t talk to him nor will I ever speak to him again,” Gunvalson replied on Twitter. “This man is sick.”
