As previously reported, the gunman walked up to Grimmie and shot her as she was signing autographs with the band Before You Exit after their show. The singer’s brother immediately tackled the gunman, who then shot and killed himself. Grimmie was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but her rep later confirmed to Us Weekly that she had died. She was 22.

“There is no indication that they knew each other,” police chief John Mina said during a press conference on Saturday, June 11.

According to police, the suspect, who appeared to be a “deranged fan,” traveled to Orlando from another city in Florida to commit the crime. Mina stated that the gunman originally planned to travel back home to the undisclosed location after the shooting.
