She got it from her mama! Carrie Fisher took the stage at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium on Sunday, Jan. 25, to honor her mother, iconic actress Debbie Reynolds.
Reynolds, 82, was celebrated at the 2015 Screen Actors Guild Awards for her nearly seven decades in show business, including her work on the big screen, in television shows, and on Broadway. Fellow Hollywood veteran Fisher, 58, introduced her mom before presenting her with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
As she shared the stage with her daughter, Reynolds took the chance to poke some fun at the Star Wars actress. After expressing her gratitude for the honor, the wisecracking icon looked back on one of her most celebrated films in contrast to one of Fisher’s most famous roles.
“A while ago, I did a movie… It was Singin’ in the Rain,” she began of the 1952 classic. “My favorite movie was Singin’ in the Rain. I had a good time making that picture, wearing myself out… Of course I had a wonderful hairdo in that picture. Some of you may not remember this [but] at the back of my head I had a big ugly bun.”
“So, I warned my daughter Carrie, who had just gotten a part in a big picture, Star Wars, ‘Well Carrie, be careful of any weird hairdos,'” Reynolds continued, making reference to the famed pair of buns Fisher wore on either side of her head as Star Wars‘ Princess Leia in the 1977 original. “Luckily George [Lucas] gave her two buns. Thank you, George.”
