Dr. Oz Shares His 5 Tips for How to Maintain Your New Year’s Resolutions: Watch the Exclusive Video

Faltering already? Dr. Oz to the rescue! Health and wellness expert Dr. Mehmet Oz stopped by Us Weekly‘s NYC headquarters recently, sharing the inside scoop on how to maintain your New Year’s resolutions.

“Resolutions are as old as the Romans,” Dr. Oz, 55, tells Us. “People dis them as not being as effective, but it increases the chances of you following through on a decision you’ve made tenfold. But … you’ve got to make the right kind of New Year’s resolutions.”

In the video above, Dr. Oz expands on specific ways to slim down, feel healthier and achieve those goals in 2016. He also provides examples of nutrient-rich foods (including what’s in his bag at all times!), and the medical data behind how long it takes for bodies to adjust to healthier lifestyles.

1. Don’t Be Vague

“That’s going to lead to failure,” he says, “as you don’t actually keep track of what you’re doing.”

2. Have a Game Plan

“You have to have a very specific game plan to get there. And it can’t be grandiose. It can be very achievable.”

3. Tell Your Friends

“Be social. Be public,” the TV personality, who just launched his latest program, the Day-Off Diet, tells Us. “Because it makes you accountable.”

According to Dr. Oz, you are the company you keep. “If you especially associate with folks who are not enablers, they’re your true friends,” he tells Us. “They’ll hold you accountable.”

4. Eat Healthy

There are some misconceptions about healthy food consumption, says Dr. Oz. “You want to make sure that you’re eating foods that your body thanks you for,” he explains.

5. Eat Nutrient-Rich Foods

“In general, the body wants nutrients, not calories,” he notes. “That’s why people gain weight; they eat junk food that has no nutrients but lots of calories.”
