Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter revealed that he's battling cancer

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter is battling cancer. The 90-year-old confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

"Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body," Carter wrote in a statement posted on his official site. "A more complete public statement will be made when facts are known, possibly next week."

The former Georgia senator and 39th president — who was elected to the White House in 1976 and held office from 1977 to 1981 — also noted that he will be rearranging his schedule to undergo treatment at Emory Healthcare in Georgia.

According to the Associated Press, Carter had a small mass from his liver removed on Aug. 3. "[His] prognosis is excellent for a full recovery," Carter Center spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said at the time.

The ex commander-in-chief has been married to former First Lady Rosalynn Carter since 1946. The couple are parents to sons John, James, and Donnel, and daughter Amy.
