"For women in Hollywood, when they're coupling, everything is about the brand. Everything is about latching on to a rising star, so you can kick your heels up. That's never been my story, ever," Union, 42, told Yahoo Style. "I make sure to let people know all of the hard work that's gone into my career."
"Now that it's time to get married to a man who happens to play basketball and has done well for himself, I want to make it clear that I have in no way hitched my wagon to his star," the Being Mary Jane actress continued. "I have my own wagon and star."
Back in February 2014, Union made her prenup intentions known during The Arsenio Hall Show. "I've never seen Dwyane balance a checkbook," she said at the time. "I have to protect my stuff."
Union and the NBA star, 33, exchanged vows at the Chateau Artisan castle in Miami after four years of dating. In February 2014, she joked that their wedding was a "princess moment" for her longtime beau.
"He has waited for this for a long time. He's been hoarding bridal magazines. He's very ready," she joked to Ellen DeGeneres. "Every aspect — aspects I didn't even know went into wedding planning — he is on."
This is the second marriage for both. Union was married to NFL star Chris Howard from 2001 to 2005. The couple did not have a prenup. Wade was married to high school sweetheart Siohvaughn Funches from 2002 to 2007. The exes are parents to sons Zaire, nearly 13, and Zion, 7. He's also dad to son Xavier, 14 months, from a previous relationship.
