The girl group G.R.L. have split nine months after the tragic death of bandmate Simone Battle

Just not the same. The girl group G.R.L. have decided to split, it was announced on Wednesday, June 3. The news comes nearly a year after bandmate Simone Battle died at age 25.

“Nearly 9 months following the tragic death of band member Simone Battle, girl group G.R.L. announces today that they are disbanding,” Kemosabe Records, RCA Records, Larry Rudolph, and Robin Antin said in a statement, via Billboard. “We wish them continued success in each of their next creative endeavors.”

Battle joined G.R.L. — Emmalyn Estrada, Lauren Bennett, Paula Van Oppen, and Natasha Slayton — in October 2011. She appeared on the U.S. version of The X Factor that year, and was mentored by Simon Cowell. In September 2014, she died of suicide by hanging.

“Words cannot express the depth of our loss. Simone’s incredible talent was only surpassed by the size of her heart. We will carry her memory with us in everything we do,” G.R.L. tweeted at the time.

Cowell added: “I am so sad to hear about the news Simone Battle has passed away. She was such a fun nice person. It’s such a loss. Rest in peace Simone.”
