Take that, Kim Kardashian! Gwyneth Paltrow is fully aware of the jokes surrounding her “conscious uncoupling” from Chris Martin. In fact, she thinks it broke “the f–king Internet.” The One Hit Wonders actress joked about the divorce lingo during the Fast Company Innovation Festival in NYC on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
Paltrow and the Coldplay frontman, 38 — who share daughter Apple, 11, and son Moses, 9 — announced in March 2014 that they were “consciously uncoupling” after 10 years of marriage. The term was first developed by bestselling author Katherine Woodward Thomas, and is a five-week program that helps couples split in an amicable way.
“When I was announcing my husband and I were separating and we were trying to follow this specific way of doing it and the philosophy is conscious uncoupling and we like broke the f–king internet,” Paltrow, 43, said during The Goop Q&A with Katie Couric and Lisa Gersh. “It’s such a hard time personally and then you have this added layer of all this criticism.”
She continued: “Then when you look back you go, ‘Well, this is actually kind of a good thing to talk back, introducing in some way.’ Like, what if you could break up in a way where you remain a family even though you’re not a couple? And what would be that effect on your children and your community? Even though we did it in an inelegant way — because it was such an emotional time and we didn’t give it as much context and didn’t explain [that it] wasn’t something that I was inventing — it was already an established theory.”
As previously reported, Paltrow filed for divorce this past April, and the friendly exes have already moved on. The Oscar winner and Scream Queens executive producer Brad Falchuk have been dating since August 2014. (They first met when Paltrow guest-starred on the Fox comedy Glee.) Martin briefly romanced Jennifer Lawrence, and is currently dating Peaky Blinders actress Annabelle Wallis.
