Aaron Carter just can't seem to get enough Hilary Duff. Now Hilary herself is finally responding to her ex's ongoing infatuation.
Carter, the younger brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, and Duff, then a Disney darling starring in Lizzie McGuire, began dating in 2000 — when both were just 13 — and continued on and off until 2003. In the "off" periods Aaron courted Lindsay Lohan, which lead to a slew of teenage gossip drama.
"I started dating Hilary [Duff] on my 13th birthday," he told host CNBC back in 2005. "I was dating her for like a year-and-a-half and then I just got a little bored so I went and I started getting to know Lindsay, dating Lindsay."
Meanwhile, Hilary moved on. She married former NHL player Mike Comrie, 33, in 2010, and they have one son together, Luca Cruz Comrie, 2.
In 2012, Aaron spoke with Fox News about Hilary’s marriage, her pregnancy news, and his regret over losing her. "I'm really happy for her that she's in a successful relationship and that she's going to have a baby," he said. "Sometimes I think to myself, maybe that could have been me but it is what it is."
Fast forward to 2014, where Aaron, 26, keeps referring to Hilary, also 26, as "the love of my life."
In March, Aaron took to Twitter to share his lingering feelings with the world:
These came after he retweeted a photo of Duff captioned "hilary duff is flawless."
And in April, he told Entertainment Tonight, "I'm not going to give up on Hilary, ever."
In an interview with BuzzFeed in Australia this week, where she was promoting her music comeback, Duff was asked how she felt about Aaron's continued declarations of love.
"I was not expecting this question," she replied, laughing. "He does, I keep seeing that, that he keeps doing that. I don't know how I feel. I mean, that was so long ago, and obviously I'm still married, and I have a baby and we kind of just…"
"Don't know each other?" the reporter interjected.
"Yeah, don't know each other… so… yeah."
"So it's just weird."
You said it, not me!"
Perhaps Carter was encouraged by the news in January, when Duff and Comrie announced that they were "amicably" separating.
However, Duff and Comrie haven't made a clean split. In March, they were seen having breakfast together in Beverly Hills with their son. And in April they were holding hands at Coachella — no kid in sight.
With her new "I'm still married" comments, perhaps she and Comrie are indeed giving things a second chance?
Even if not, it gives her a convenient cover to avoid awkward exchanges about those weird Carter comments.
