The on-set injury is just another surprise that has come from filming the crime drama. In recent months, Gyllenhaal has revealed quite the weight loss while preparing to take on the film's character Lou, a freelance crime reporter that has stumbled upon the wasted underground of Los Angeles.

"I knew that [Lou] was literally and figuratively hungry," Gyllenhaal told Us of his gaunt appearance at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards on Oct. 21. "[So] I was always a bit hungry."

Indeed, instead of sticking to a strict diet, the heartthrob admitted that he slimmed down without the help of any specific regime. "I just love this movie," he said of his willingness to transformation his body for the part. "That's how I did it. There really was no technique."
