As he prepares to star in the new TV comedy Friends With Better Lives (from Friends‘ producer Dana Klein), James Van Der Beek took some time to reflect on past roles, including the one that made him famous — Dawson Leery on the beloved WB drama, Dawson’s Creek.
And though Dawson put him on the map, the 36-year-old admits he probably wouldn’t even be friends with the mopey character in real life in a new interview with Paper Magazine.
“Dawson was sweet, but would probably get on my nerves and end up as one of those people I found myself making excuses to not hang out with,” he revealed. “I liked Mox [Varsity Blues], he was a pretty solid dude. I think I’d avoid Sean Bateman [The Rules of Attraction] at all costs. I like Will [FWBL], though. I could watch football with him on a regular basis.”
Admittedly, Dawson was a bit of a downer to the inhabitants of Capeside, but his iconic persona provided plenty of ammo when Van Der Beek played an over-the-top version of himself on the now-cancelled ABC cult comedy Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23.
Van Der Beek isn’t the only one reminiscing on the Dawson’s Creek days. Oscar nominee Michelle Williams recently revealed that she’s taken her daughter, Matlida Ledger, to visit the show’s North Carolina set in her first trip back since the drama ended. The show also starred a then-unknown Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson.
Van Der Beek’s new comedy is set to premiere midseason on CBS and also stars Brooklyn Decker and Kevin Connolly.
