She has her home back! Bethenny Frankel opened up about her emotional week, during which her estranged husband Jason Hoppy finally moved out of her Tribeca apartment, on her weekly SiriusXM radio show, B Real With Bethenny.
The ex-couple’s former marital home has been at the center of their ongoing divorce battle since the couple split in December 2012. The Skinnygirl mogul, 45, bought the apartment under a trust and named herself and her ex as its beneficiaries; however, a judge later ruled the trust invalid in March 2016. Unable to cohabitate, she moved between hotels and temporary living arrangements while renovations on her new SoHo pad were completed. Hoppy stayed put in Tribeca.
“I’ve cried so many times,” Frankel said on her show. “When is it going to be over? When am I going to get that apartment back?” She recalled that it was the first big purchase she’d ever made, and said it was hard to move from place to place with her 6-year-old daughter Bryn, whom she shares with Hoppy.
“I just wanted so badly for that to be over and to be able to sell it and just close that part of the chapter,” she said. “The divorce isn’t over, but that part.”
The Real Housewives of New York City star finally returned to her former Tribeca home several days ago. “I walked in and it just washed over me. I sobbed for hours,” she said. “It was like this release, and you always think things are going to be one way. I thought it was going to be, like, the biggest party ever. I’d be roller-skating through there with my top off, my tits hanging out, so excited — and there’s nothing good about any of it. It was all just remembering moving in there. It was a hideous experience, and I just didn't know how to even process the feeling.”
The week was even more emotional because Frankel decided to reach out to her estranged mother, Bernadette Birk, whom she hadn’t “spoken to in about 15 years.” The entrepreneur had a difficult childhood, which she detailed in her book A Place of Yes.
“My daughter said, ‘Mommy, are your parents alive?’” she recalled. “And I said, ‘My daddy’s not alive and my mommy is alive.’ And she said, ‘I want to meet your mommy.’ And I thought, ‘Oh god, I’ve got to reach out to her.’”
The reality star said that the conversation with her mother was not “totally unpleasant” and that she’s matured in the way she handles relationships. “I just feel like I’ve grown up a little in the way that I handled it … I didn’t want to light any fires. I’m not angry about anything, about any of my childhood. It wasn’t ideal, but everyone has their s–t.”
