Jennifer Garner is focusing on work amid ongoing drama surrounding her split from husband Ben Affleck. While her soon-to-be ex is making headlines for his romance with the couple’s former nanny, Garner is going about business as usual in Georgia, where she’s been on location since early July.
During a break from filming Miracles in Heaven in Atlanta on July 26, Garner, 43, stopped by Scottish Rite hospital with her costar Kylie Rogers to visit patients in the pediatric cancer ward. One of the families Garner spent time with was the Shepherds, who were there supporting Henry Shepherd, 9, on his penultimate chemotherapy treatment for Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer.
“It was a complete surprise. One of the nurses brought her to our door and she walked right in,” Henry’s mom, Carrie, told Us Weekly of the afternoon visit. Henry, a big fan of Garner’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, bonded with the actress over the 2014 comedy. “We were talking about the party at the end of the movie, and Henry said when he is cancer-free, he wants a party just like that,” Shepherd’s mom recalled. “Henry told her that, and when she walked out she said, ‘Henry, I hope you get your party.'”
Posing for photos with Henry and his twin sister, Garner did not look like a woman dealing with marital strife, said Shepherd. “She was really sweet, down-to-earth, and very genuine,” Shepherd said. “It certainly lifted the patients’ [spirits], and I think everyone was very thrilled to meet her.”
Three days later, when Us Weekly exclusively broke news that Affleck has been dating nanny Christine Ouzounian, Garner was on set filming Miracles in Heaven. Queen Latifah and Martin Henderson co-star in the 2016 film, based on the book Three Miracles From Heaven by Christy Beam.
