Depp and Stanhope’s L.A. outing comes after Stanhope defended Depp against his estranged wife Amber Heard’s allegations that he abused her during their relationship. (Depp’s lawyers have previously denied the allegations, claiming that Heard is simply trying to gain financial security.)

In a candid post shared on his website and with TheWrap on May 29, Stanhope claimed that Depp confided in him, saying that Heard was planning on leaving him and plotting to blackmail him. “He opened up in the most vulnerable of ways … that Amber was now going to leave him, threatening to lie about him publicly in any and every possible duplicitous way if he didn’t agree to her terms,” the comedian alleged. “Blackmail is what I would imagine other people might put it.”

Heard has since filed a defamation lawsuit against Stanhope. In court documents obtained by Us Weekly, her lawyer alleges that Stanhope is simply trying to “divert public attention away from the true facts regarding Depp which caused their marriage to fail.”

During a June 20 interview with Howard Stern, Stanhope defended his post, calling the lawsuit a “bulls–t suit.”

“I think what she’s trying to do is make me shut the f–k up,” Stanhope told the king of all media. “Because I can’t say anything about it, and now I’m talking more.”

A rep for Stanhope previously had no comment.
