Johnny Depp to Star in J.K. Rowling’s ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel Alongside Eddie Redmayne

The wizarding world just gained a world-famous pirate! Johnny Depp has signed on to star in the next Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film, Deadline reports. While Depp makes a cameo in the first Harry Potter spinoff, opening on November 18, the 53-year-old will have a larger role alongside Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander in its sequel. Depp’s role in the film has not been announced.

Director David Yates will begin filming the second installment in January 2017, and that movie will be released on November 16, 2018, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The script for the first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film was inspired by J.K. Rowling’s 2001 book by the same name. Designed as a textbook that Harry Potter studies at Hogwarts, Beasts’ screen adaptation delves into a story about its fictional author, Newt Scamander, who travels to 1920s New York and unwittingly unleashes mystical creatures on the city.

In October, J.K. Rowling confirmed that she plans to write a total of five films in the Fantastic Beasts series. Previously, the series was only meant to be a trilogy, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Meanwhile, Depp is still involved with another heavyweight franchise: He’ll reprise his role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth film in that blockbuster series, which is set to be released on May 26, 2017.

The fifth Pirates film will be Depp’s first major release since his ugly split with 30-year-old actress Amber Heard in August 2016.
