Kacy Catanzaro Crushes American Ninja Warrior Course, Becomes First Woman in the Finals

Kacy Catanzaro might just be the best athlete you’ve never heard of. The 5-foot-tall, 100-pound gymnast made history on Monday, July 14, when she became the first woman ever to qualify for the final round of NBC’s obstacle course competition American Ninja Warrior. But the Belleville, N.J., native didn’t just finish the course—she absolutely destroyed it.

The petite but clearly powerful Towson University alum aced every challenged she faced, with only very minor stumbles (from which she recovered admirably). Her incredible display of athletic prowess had the audience—and the show’s hosts—cheering wildly; Twitter users marveled at her ability, too, tagging their posts online with #MightyKacy.

(For perspective, consider that some Olympians and Army men have failed to complete the course.)

“I’ve seen greatness during my NFL career,” ANW host and former Oakland Raiders defensive end Akbar Gbaja-Biamila raved. “And I’ve been in awe of people. But I am really in awe of Kacy.”

Added co-host Matt Iseman: “We are seeing one of the greatest competitors, man or woman, we have ever seen in American Ninja Warrior.”

Even her coach, Brent Steffensen, was amazed by the feat. “That was crazy!” he said afterward. “What was that?!”
