“It’s very bittersweet,” Graham said on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz on Wednesday, April 8. “We’re all family, and you always want to stay together forever, but everyone has their journey, and all you can do is wish them well and support them. This was a decision that I know was made a long, long time ago. I’m just excited for her, and to see what’s next.”

Dobrev announced she was exiting the show after six seasons on Monday, April 6, posting a lengthy message to her fans on Instagram.

"Dearest TVD Family," she wrote. "I always knew I wanted Elena's story to be a six season adventure, and within those six years I got the journey of a lifetime," she added, explaining to her fans that she had just celebrated a goodbye party with the cast and crew. "I was a human, a vampire, a doppelganger, a crazy immortal, a doppelganger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelganger. I got kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, was dead and undead, and there's still so much more to come before the season finale in May."
