Katy Perry sympathizes with Spencer Morrill, a Knoxville man who appeared on Catfish: The TV Show and believed he was in a six-year online relationship with the pop star.
The “Rise” singer, 31, appeared on SiriusXM’s The Morning Mash Up on Tuesday, August 23, and said she had seen an article about the episode. “Somebody sent me a link,” she said. “I didn’t actually read through it, because I just think it’s really unfortunate and really sad.” Listen to what Perry said, and watch the clip from Catfish in the video above.
When one of the hosts joked that Morrill must not have been “wide awake” (a pun on her 2010 hit), Perry explained that the topic isn’t a joking matter for her. “You know, like, my heart goes out to him actually, because anybody that’s been fooled like that or just, you know, people have dreams, and people live in different parts of the world where not everything is always so accessible,” she said. “Like, we live on the coast, and we, you know, we get stuff in a way that some other people don’t get, and I feel bad for him, and so I didn’t really like to indulge in that, because my heart … I empathize.”
In the episode, which aired on August 17, Morrill sought help from the show’s hosts, Nev Schulman and Max Joseph, to find Perry. He said he’d never met her, but they had communicated via email, text and messaging apps and had once talked on the phone. He even used a quarter of his savings on a ring for Perry, combining his great-grandmother’s emerald with a diamond band. The Catfish crew discovered the person he was actually talking to was a Canadian woman named Harriet, who was living in London.
In real life, Perry has been dating Orlando Bloom since the pair hit it off at a Golden Globes party in January. They recently returned from a vacation to France and Italy, where the Lord of the Rings actor, 39, made headlines for stripping down at the beach and paddleboarding completely naked.
