Blake Shelton, Selena Gomez, Nick Jonas and Adam Levine Star in Kids’ Choice Awards 2016 Opening Sketch

What a way to start the show! Blake Shelton kicked off his hosting gig at the 2016 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday, March 12, with special appearances from Selena Gomez; last year’s host, Nick Jonas; Chewbacca and more!

During the Star Wars–themed opening sketch, the country singer prepped for the ceremony in his dressing room as he received visits from Gomez, Jonas, Chewbacca, Adam Levine and Pharrell Williams before being involved in a shoot-out.

Earlier in the day, a source told Us Weekly that the hosting gig was actually Shelton’s idea.

“He thought it would be a really fun thing, and they’d never had anyone like Blake do it, so his team suggested it,” the insider told Us. “He’s pretty excited about it, but Gwen’s kids are really excited. They adore Blake and are obsessed with the fact he’s hosting the Kids’ Choice Awards and that he’s going to be in the Angry Birds movie and do the theme song. They think he’s so cool!”

Gwen Stefani — who is mom of sons Kingston, 9, Zuma, 7, and Apollo, 2 — and Shelton, 39, have been spending a lot of time together when they’re not busy working on their own personal projects. The No Doubt singer’s third solo album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, is set to be released on Friday, March 18. The Voice judge’s new single, “Came Here to Forget,” was released earlier this week.

Stefani, 46, wasn’t at the Kids’ Choice Awards on Saturday — the singer is in Japan and tweeted about her disappointment at missing the show. But she later posted about watching her man via FaceTime, and got to see him dressed as a unicorn.

Shelton’s special guests are also very busy with their own promotional gigs. Gomez, 23, will embark on a summer tour starting May 6, in Las Vegas, while Jonas, 23, and Demi Lovato will kick off their own coheadlining Future Now tour on June 24 in Sunrise, Florida.
