Kirk Cameron Defends Rep. Todd Akin on TODAY, CNN

If it were up to Kirk Cameron, all the Todd Akin haters would just get left behind.

During chats with both the TODAY show and CNN Monday, Cameron weighed in on the criticism of Rep. Akin, who, in a Sunday interview, opined that abortion should be illegal across the board, as women very rarely get pregnant in cases of “legitimate rape.”

Implying that Akin’s remarks have largely been taken out of context on TODAY, Cameron remarked that, “I do know, as I’ve actually sat down to watch the video, I’ve learned to go watch it and not just read some of the transcripts . . . Clearly this is a man who is advocating the sanctity of life through and through. And he said he misspoke and he apologized for it. I like to evaluate people based on their entire life, their entire career, all they stand for.”

Added the Left Behind actor, 41, “[Akin] loves his wife, he’s got six children, I believe he’s a good man, and he’s now in a very, very difficult spot.” (For his part, Akin has since apologized, calling his statement “ill-conceived” and “wrong.”)

When it comes to his socially conservative beliefs, Cameron rarely holds back when asked for his thoughts on current events. In fact, this is the second time this year the outspoken, evangelical actor is taking heat for his ultra right-wing views. During a March sit-down with Piers Morgan, the Growing Pains star commented that he believes homosexuality is “unnatural,” as well as “detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.”
