Lady Gaga is taking a much-needed breather — but not by choice. The singer told fans on Facebook and Twitter Tuesday, Feb. 12 that she has been forced to cancel her concerts in Chicago, Detroit and Hamilton, Canada due to illness.

"There's an unfortunate announcement coming out right now, concerning myself and the Born This Way Ball. I'm so sorry. I barely know what to say. I've been hiding a show injury and chronic pain for sometime now, over the past month it has worsened," the 26-year-old "Born This Way" singer wrote in a statement. "I've been praying it would heal. I hid it from my staff, I didn't want to disappoint my amazing fans. However after last night's performance I could not walk and still can't."

"To the fans in Chicago, Detroit and Hamilton, I hope you can forgive me, as it is nearly impossible for me to forgive myself," she added.

Gaga was scheduled to perform two shows in Chicago at the United Center on Wednesday and Thursday, followed by a show at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich. on Saturday and Hamilton at Copps Coliseum on Sunday.

In an additional Twitter message, Gaga explained that the postponement of the shows was ordered by her doctor due to "a case of synovitis (severe inflammation of joints)."

"I'm devastated and sad," Gaga wrote. "It will hopefully heal as soon as possible, I hate this. I hate this so much. I love you and I'm sorry."
