Melania Trump is suing The Daily Mail and a blogger named Webster Griffin Tarpley for libel over reports that she was an “escort” in the '90s, her attorney confirmed to Reuters on Thursday, September 1.
"Melania Trump filed suit today in the state circuit court for Montgomery County, Maryland, against Mail Media, Inc. which publishes the Daily Mail Online, and against Webster G. Tarpley who publishes a weblog in Montgomery County, Maryland," Trump's attorney, Charles Harder, said in a statement. "These defendants made several statements about Mrs. Trump that are 100 percent false and tremendously damaging to her personal and professional reputation."
USA Today reports that Melania, who is married to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, is suing for $150 million.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Melania is suing over Tarpley’s August 19 article titled: "Naked photoshoots, and troubling questions about visas that won't go away: The VERY racy past of Donald Trump's Slovenian wife." Tarpley has since issued a retraction on his site.
The Daily Mail’s article, meanwhile, examined Melania’s journey to New York City when she worked as a model on a visa in the United States. The story referenced “highly-charged, lesbian-themed nude photographs.”
According to documents obtained by THR, the complaint reads that “the conduct of Daily Mail was despicable, abhorrent, intentional, malicious and oppressive, and thus justifies an award of punitive damages.”
Harder is the same attorney who scored Hulk Hogan’s $140 million verdict against Gawker.
