Mick Jagger needs his Rolling Stones bandmates now more than ever. One day after the rocker, 70, shared a heartbreaking message mourning the death of his famed fashion designer girlfriend, L’Wren Scott, his fellow musicians Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts expressed their support and love for him.
“No one saw this coming,” Richards told Rolling Stone magazine of Scott’s March 17 suicide at age 47. “Mick’s always been my soul brother and we love him. We’re thick as thieves and we’re all feeling for the man. We really hate to disappoint our fans, but we’ll see everyone really soon.”
(As previously reported, the legendary group postponed several shows in Australia and New Zealand after news broke of Scott’s death. Concertgoers have been asked to retain their tickets for soon-to-be rescheduled dates.)
Guitarist Wood expressed a similar sentiment. “This is such terrible news, and right now the important thing is that we are all pulling together to offer Mick our support and help him through this sad time,” he said in a statement. “Without a doubt we intend to be back out on that stage as soon as we can.”
Added the band’s drummer, Watts: “Needless to say we are all completely shocked, but our first thought is to support Mick at this awful time. We intend to come back to Australia and New Zealand as soon as it proves possible.”
Jagger, for his part, mourned Scott in a Facebook message posted one day after her death. “I am still struggling to understand how my lover and best friend could end her life in this tragic way,” he wrote. “We spent many wonderful years together and had made a great life for ourselves. She had great presence and her talent was much admired, not least by me.”
