After watching a young man fail to hold the door open for a limping senior citizen, Alexis Bloomer needed to vent. So that’s exactly what the millennial news anchor did. In a video posted to her Facebook page on April 22, the disgusted 23-year-old explained why her generation “sucks.”
“Our generation doesn’t have the basic manners that include ‘no, ma’am,’ and ‘yes, ma’am.’ We don’t even hold doors open for ladies, much less our elders anymore,” the Texas-based journalist seethed in her 2-minute video, which has been viewed more than 41 million times and has more than 1 million shares. “We listen to really obscene music that degrades women and pretty much glorifies drugs and crime.”
She continued: “We use words like ‘bae’ to describe someone we love, and we idolize people like Kim Kardashian, and then we shame people like Tim Tebow.” (The former NFL quarterback has vowed to remain a virgin until marriage.)
In the rant, Bloomer — who graduated from Dan Rather School of Journalism at Sam Houston State University — called those born between 1985 and 1996 “lazy” and “entitled,” and lashed out at them for not fighting harder for causes. “Our idea of standing up for something we believe in means going on Facebook and posting a status with your opinion,” she said. “And we believe the number of followers we have reflects who we are as a person.”
She also noted that same day in a comment on her post that she doesn’t believe everyone in her generation is like this. “I know that not all of millennials are bad,” she wrote. “This video was not intended to offend anyone, in fact, it shouldn’t offend anyone unless you’re guilty of doing these things.”
Six days later, on Thursday, April 28, Bloomer told Fox News: “It was more of a call to action than a rant. It was telling all of us that we should step up and prove people wrong and be the better generation and not go out with such a bad reputation.”
