The Duke, 31, and Duchess of Cambridge, 32, introduced their 8-month-old son to a small Bilby, which was named after the little prince a few months ago. George squealed with delight, wriggling this arms and legs in excitement. The family attended to open the official Prince George Bilby Exhibit.

The determined, wiggly tot even tried to reach out and touch the Bibly, but Middleton advised the zookeeper to place the creature out of her son’s reach.

“He’s trying to grab his ear,” she said. “He’s got quite a strong grab actually.”

“If he gets it, he’ll never let go!” William chimed in.

Bilbies were once common in Australia, but have recently been driven to the verge of extinction. This causes a conservation campaign to start in the 1960s, which included replacing chocolate Easter bunnies with chocolate Bilbies.

The royal couple also took the time to meet some of the zoo’s other animals, including a friendly koala bear and the kangaroos. Middleton wore a pale yellow eyelet dress from an independent designer while William wore a blue checkered shirt. Matching his father, George wore a Rachel Riley blue shirt and blueberry-colored shorts.

The zoo presented the royals with a plaque which read, “A national gift from the Commonwealth Government to commemorate the birth of His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge,” and also presented the youngster with a toy Bilby (which he promptly threw on the ground).

“He does love it honestly!” his father assured the laughing crowd.

The event saw many onlookers, some of which had been there since early in the morning, waiting for a chance to see the royals.

“Several hundred people were here in the long lines first thing this morning,” said Lisa Keen, the communications manager for the zoo.
