Rita Ora Opens Up About Calvin Harris Split: “I Thought He Had My Back”

Rita Ora opened up about her split from Calvin Harris: "I thought he had my back," she said about Taylor Swift's boyfriend in a new interview.

He let her down, after all? British singer Rita Ora dished some details about her split from Calvin Harris to Marie Claire in its July 2015 issue.

Ora, 24, and the Scottish DJ, 31, dated from May 2013 through early 2014. The news of their split was confirmed directly by Harris, who tweeted about their breakup in a memorable message. "To address speculation—myself and Rita ended our relationship some time ago," Harris wrote last June. "She is a beautiful, talented woman & I wish her all the best."

Ora told Marie Claire that while their initial breakup was amicable, it was the aftermath that left a bad taste in her mouth. "There was a reason why I split up with him," she revealed in her latest interview. "And there was a reason why I'm at this point in my life where I feel like I have so much musical freedom, and I don't have to explain myself to anybody… It was more of a thing where I was in awe. I was at that point in my relationship where I felt he could do no wrong."

But then, things happened. "I thought he had my back and that he'd never steer me wrong," she said of her ex. "But then 'I Will Never Let You Down' came out, and everything started to go a bit weird. I don't know if it was because business was mixed with personal or what."

Indeed, the release of the single was a tumultuous time for the two. Ora revealed to Ryan Seacrest last August that Harris prevented her from performing the single — which the EDM DJ wrote and produced — during the Teen Choice Awards that same month. "For anybody who doesn’t understand how it works, he wrote and produced the song," Ora explained to Seacrest. "So he has to approve anything TV-wise… And obviously he owns the rights to it and he didn’t approve the Teen Choice Awards."

Harris then ripped her in response. "You'll only know 1 side of the story RE Teen choice awards because I choose not to talk to the papers about every aspect of my personal life," Harris tweeted a day later. "But just know I had a damn good reason."

While it appears the hatchet isn't entirely buried, both Ora and Harris moved on romantically. As exclusively revealed by Us Weekly this past April, Harris has been dating pop superstar Taylor Swift. Following her split from Harris, Ora was linked to Tommy Hilfiger's son Richard.

"I'm afraid of being alone," Ora, who counts Rob Kardashian and Jonah Hill among her exes, told Marie Claire. "I'm not afraid to admit that, you know. I'm not embarrassed to admit that. I just hope it's not a never-ending cycle. Sometimes love just makes you feel crazy. And that feeling that we have as girls, just to have that feeling, even for five seconds, it's like crack. I mean, don't compare it to that, but you know what I mean. It's like comfort eating."
