He may have been immortal, but Edward Cullen is gone forever from movie screens. Robert Pattinson told Variety at the Cannes Film Festival in France, on Sunday, May 18, that he is over his brooding vampire days.

"I couldn't do another Twilight movie," Pattinson, 28, told Variety. "I'm too old."

"No one thought it was going to be a big deal," Pattinson added to Variety of the Twilight franchise. Of the first installment, which hit theaters in 2008, Pattinson mused, "We thought it was going to be like Thirteen." The actor was referring to Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke's 2003 directorial debut, which starred Evan Rachel Wood and Nikki Reed.

Contrary to what he believed at the time, Pattinson became a household name after he took on the role of vampire Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight film franchise. He went on to play Cullen in the remaining installments of the Twilight saga, including New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn: Parts 1 and 2, securing his A-list heartthrob status.

It's also where he met his ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart. The two were first romantically linked in 2009, and their relationship unraveled after Us Weekly exclusively broke the news of Stewart's July 2012 fling with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders.

Pattinson's post-Twilight career has included several Blockbuster flops. Nevertheless, the smoldering Brit maintains that he still prefers to work on more artistically-inclined dramas with directors like David Cronenberg and David Michod.

Pattinson's upcoming roles include a promiscuous limo driver in Cronenberg's drama, Maps to the Stars. "He's incredibly respectful," Pattinson said of Cronenberg, with whom he previously collaborated on the 2012 film Cosmopolis. He also has a starring role in a new Australian action movie, The Rover, which has earned preliminary critical acclaim at Cannes.
